Retirement Life Planner

Design the life first. We'll solve for the money.

Other apps ask your age and risk tolerance, then hand you an abstract number. RetireMap starts with the life you actually picture — the house, the place, the vehicle, the trips, healthcare covered — prices it honestly, and works backward to the capital or monthly income that funds it, anywhere on Earth.

🇺🇸 For US service members & veterans Serving — or served? Your benefits count here.

Most retirement calculators ignore the benefits you earned. RetireMap counts them all, as the two separate programs they are: your DoD military pension, your VA disability pay (tax-free) and TRICARE — plus a map of where VA care actually works if you retire abroad, from Puerto Rico to Manila.

No app to install and no account — RetireMap runs right in your browser, on any phone or computer. On a phone, your browser's “Add to Home Screen” keeps it one tap away; if a link ever opens inside another app and shows an error, open it in Chrome or Safari instead.

Answer four questions and we'll load the closest example plan into the builder — every number stays editable.

The example library

Best-fit examples for real targets

Each example is a complete, believable plan — a place, a home, a vehicle, a monthly life — with the money already worked out. Clone one, then change anything. Examples are starting points, not prescriptions.

Tap ♥ Shortlist on any card to keep it as a finalist.

The US library

All 50 states, priced

Every state in the union (plus DC), each with a representative retirement town and the state's other well-known places listed right on its card — Florida's card, for example, covers Orlando, Miami, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Sarasota, Naples and more. Every place gets the same treatment: local build and land costs, healthcare bands and the state's retirement tax quirk. The monthly and target figures price the same standard life everywhere — a 2,000 sq ft home, a mid-size SUV, $4,500/mo spending — so states compare apples to apples. Figures are Tier 2 covered-destination estimates: solid starting points, and every number stays editable once you load a state into the builder. Every card also shows the two costs brochures hide — average property tax and homeowners insurance — because in states like Florida, insurance can cost more than the tax bill.

Latin America · South America · Europe

Every country in Latin & South America — plus Europe's best

All 20 Latin American countries are now in the library — Mexico through Argentina — plus Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana so South America is complete, the Caribbean favourites, and a hand-picked set of Europe's strongest retirement bases: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Malta, France, Ireland, Cyprus and Albania. Each country gets one well-known retirement town, priced on the same standard life as the states (2,000 sq ft home, mid-size SUV, $4,500/mo spending) so everything compares fairly. Figures are Tier 2 covered-destination estimates — editable the moment you load a place into the builder. Filter by region or search a country or town.

Step 2 of 5 · Build your plan

The plan builder

Price the life you want

Change anything — the goal cost, the gap, your estimated retirement age, the probability and the recommendations all update instantly. The math is a transparent calculator, not an AI guess: every assumption is shown and editable. New here? Flip on Guided steps inside the form and take it five short screens at a time — and tap the small ? on any field for a plain-English explanation.

👋 Welcome! This plan is blank on purpose — it should start with what YOU want. Three easy first steps: 1) pick the place you picture (anywhere in the library — every US state, Latin & South America, Europe, or your own town), 2) describe the life — home, vehicle, monthly spending, 3) add your numbers. Your answer builds itself live as you type. Not sure where? Take the 20-second quiz above, or wander the photo library and tap a place that feels like you.

Simple mode

Bigger text, plainer words, same honest math. Made for anyone who hates forms — flip it on and the whole page breathes.

Off — standard text size.

Talk-to-build — just describe your dream

Type it (or tap the mic and say it) the way you'd tell a friend. We'll fill the builder for you — then you can adjust anything.

Nothing to undo yet — change any number and you can take it back.

How do you picture living? One tap sets the home, car and budget fields below — no place picked yet is fine, and every number stays editable afterwards.

“Rent & keep it simple” buys almost nothing up front: no house, no solar, just a good used car — so the capital target becomes almost entirely the pot that pays your monthly bills.

1 · The life

Pick a covered destination, or choose “Anywhere mode” and name any town on Earth.

2 · Your money today

What you have and what will pay you. Leave anything at 0 — the recommendations will show what each income source is worth.

3 · US Military & VA benefits For service members & veterans

Two separate programs — they are not the same money and they are not blended here. Use either one, or both if you have both. Each dollar counts as guaranteed monthly income, so each dollar lowers the savings pot you need. Not military? Leave both at $0 and nothing changes.

Program 1 · Department of Defense

Military Retirement — DoD Retired Pay

The pension you earn from years of service (typically 20+ years under BRS / High-3). Paid by DFAS for life, with annual COLA. It is taxable federal income. Enter your actual or expected amount — check myPay / DFAS or a retirement calculator for your grade and years.

Rough check only: retired pay ≈ 2.0% (BRS) to 2.5% (High-3) × years of service × your High-3 average monthly basic pay. 20 years at $6,000 High-3 ≈ $2,400–$3,000/mo. TRICARE is the healthcare that comes with this program — often far cheaper than private insurance before 65.

Program 2 · Department of Veterans Affairs

VA Benefits — Disability Compensation & VA Healthcare

A separate benefit for a service-connected disability. Paid by the VA, tax-free for life, and it does not reduce DoD retired pay for most retirees (concurrent receipt / CRDP). Pick your rating and the 2025 amount for a single veteran with no dependents fills in — edit it if yours differs (dependents, SMC, or a newer COLA raise it).

2025 rates used (single, no dependents): 10% $171 · 30% $524 · 50% $1,075 · 70% $1,716 · 100% $3,831/mo. Because it is tax-free, $1 of VA pay is worth more than $1 of taxable pay. Verify your exact amount at VA.gov.

Your military total: No military or VA income entered yet — add either program above and it will stack into your retirement paycheck and shrink your capital target here.
How the math works One-time goal cost = land + home (size × local build cost) + solar + vehicle (adjusted for local import duties) + moving/residency + a 10-month emergency fund. Rent instead of buying, with a cheaper car and no solar, and the one-time cost shrinks to moving plus the emergency fund — the target becomes almost entirely the pot described next. Guaranteed income includes Social Security / pension, rent, dividends, DoD military retired pay and VA disability compensation (VA pay is tax-free, so it is counted at full value). The capital target adds the portfolio needed to fund the spending your guaranteed income doesn't cover, at your withdrawal rate. That portfolio is a pot you draw from a little each month, not a sum spent on retirement day. Projections compound your current assets plus monthly savings at your chosen return. The probability runs 800 simulated market paths (Monte Carlo) with volatility that rises with your Bitcoin share — the simulation is real math run in your browser, and changing the return assumption changes the result.

Step 3 · Your headline answer — read these 4 numbers first

Welcome — design the retirement life you want.

This space is yours. Pick the place you picture in the builder, add your numbers, and your own plan — your target, your date, your paycheck — appears here. No example plan is loaded: the first plan here should be yours.

Your numbers, in plain English

Don't try to read everything at once. These four numbers are the whole plan. Everything below them is just the detail behind them.

1 · Capital target — All the money you need on retirement day. It is not one bill you pay once: it is the one-time costs plus a savings pot (see the sum below). The pot is not spent on day one — you draw a little from it every month to pay your bills, while the rest stays invested and keeps working for you. Think of it as the size of the well, not a single payment.
2 · One-time cost — What you pay once to start the life: home, land, car, moving & a safety cushion. Rent instead of buying, skip the car and solar, and this number shrinks to little more than moving costs plus the cushion.
3 · Retire at — The age your savings actually reach the target at your current pace. Compare it to the age you want.
4 · Success odds — Out of 100 simulated futures, how many reach the target in time. 70%+ is strong, 40–69% is tight, under 40% needs a change — use the levers below.
—1 · Total capital target — everything you needNot a bill you pay once. It is a savings pot you build up to: part of it pays the one-time costs of starting the life, and the rest stays invested and pays you a little every month — covering whatever your pension and other income don't.Monthly life appears here
—2 · One-time goal cost — paid once, at the startHome + land + vehicle + moving + emergency cushion. Itemised line-by-line just below.
—3 · On track to retire at — at your current paceWant it earlier? Save more, add income, or pick a lower-cost place — levers are ranked below.

Suggested portfolio for this plan

₿ + income stack

Growth asset for the long game, distributions for the monthly bills.

Plainly: Bitcoin (₿) is not a place in RetireMap — it is one investment amount you can include if you hold it. Enter how much you own in the builder under “…of which Bitcoin ($)” and it is counted on the growth side of your plan, alongside your other assets. The income stack — dividends & distributions — is the part that pays the monthly bills.

Plan B — your backup location

The exact same life — home, vehicle, spending, income — priced in —, next to your main plan.

Change your Plan B in step 1 of the builder — pick any place in the library, any US state, or name your own in Anywhere mode. Every figure above stays editable in the builder, and Plan B travels with your plan code and share card.

“I retire at this age. Non-negotiable.” Lock it, and the app solves for the exact monthly savings that makes it happen on your current plan.

Life events — one tap, re-priced

Each event edits your real inputs above — nothing is hidden, and the headline, probability and recommendations all move with it.

That is your answer. The next step prices this exact same life — same home, same spending — in other places, so you can see in dollars what the place alone changes.

The three numbers most planners hide

Coast date, Social Security timing & the bridge to 65

All three update live from your plan above. The coast date is the day saving becomes optional. The claiming table prices age 62 vs 67 vs 70 on your numbers — not a generic article. And the bridge prices the health-insurance years between retiring and Medicare, the gap that scares early retirees most.

Social Security claiming optimizer

Your entered benefit is treated as your full (age-67) amount. Claiming earlier cuts it for life; waiting grows it ~8%/yr.

VA benefits around the world

Your pay travels everywhere. VA healthcare does not.

This is the split every veteran retiring abroad needs to see clearly. The money follows you anywhere on Earth. The healthcare mostly does not — outside the US and its territories, VA care narrows to service-connected treatment only. Guidance only — verify your own eligibility with the VA before you move.

For the place in your plan: pick a place in the builder and this line will tell you exactly what VA access looks like there.
Paid worldwide — no borders

💵 The money: paid anywhere

VA disability compensation is payable worldwide, tax-free, wherever you live — the VA deposits it the same as in Ohio. DoD military retired pay from DFAS is likewise payable worldwide. Living abroad does not reduce either check.

  • VA disability compensation — worldwide ✓
  • DoD retired pay (DFAS) — worldwide ✓
  • Social Security — payable in most countries ✓
Full VA facilities

🏥 Full VA care: US & its territories

Full VA hospitals and clinics exist across all 50 US states and in US territories — so a veteran gets the same VA system there as on the mainland:

  • Puerto Rico — VA Caribbean Healthcare System, San Juan VA Medical Center + clinics island-wide (Rincón is in this library)
  • Guam — VA Guam Community Based Outpatient Clinic
  • US Virgin Islands — VA clinic on St. Thomas
  • Also: American Samoa & Northern Mariana Islands (limited clinics)
One clinic abroad

🇵🇭 Manila, Philippines — the exception

The VA Manila Outpatient Clinic in Pasay City is the only VA clinic on foreign soil. It serves veterans living in the Philippines, focused on service-connected care. It is a big reason the Philippines is a classic veteran retirement base — even though it is not yet a priced destination in this library, veterans ask about it by name.

Service-connected only

🌍 Everywhere else: Foreign Medical Program (FMP)

In Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Portugal, Spain, Thailand and every other foreign country in this library, there is no VA hospital. The VA's Foreign Medical Program (FMP) reimburses care only for your service-connected conditions (and related care) — you usually pay up front, file a claim, and get reimbursed.

  • Non-service-connected care abroad — not covered by the VA
  • So budget private / local healthcare for everything else — that is the healthcare line already in your plan
  • TRICARE: retirees abroad generally fall under TRICARE Select / TRICARE Overseas rules — confirm your region and enrollment before moving

Per-destination VA notes for places in this library

Any US state, Florida & OrlandoFull VA system — hospitals & clinics statewide. Disability + retired pay deposited as normal.
Rincón, Puerto RicoFull VA territory access — San Juan VA Medical Center. No visa, US dollars, and both checks pay exactly as on the mainland. The strongest VA setup outside the 50 states.
Philippines (Manila)Only foreign-soil VA clinic (Manila). Disability + retired pay worldwide-payable. Not yet a priced library destination — use Anywhere mode to price it.
Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama & the rest of Latin AmericaBoth checks pay in full. Healthcare: FMP for service-connected care only — budget local/private care for everything else.
Portugal, Spain & EuropeBoth checks pay in full. Healthcare: FMP service-connected only; most veterans pair it with the local public system once resident.
Chiang Mai, Thailand & the rest of the worldBoth checks pay in full. Healthcare: FMP service-connected only — private care is low-cost locally, which is why the plan's healthcare line matters here.

Guidance, not a VA ruling: FMP registration, Manila clinic eligibility and TRICARE Overseas rules change and depend on your rating and enrollment. Verify at va.gov (Foreign Medical Program) and with TRICARE before making a move that depends on them.

Step 4 of 5 · Compare places

Same life, different map pin

Your exact life, priced in the places you pick

How to read this table: every row is the same life — only the place changes. One-time cost is paid once. Capital target is the total pot you need — the one-time costs plus savings that then pay you a little every month; it is not a bill you pay once. “vs. your pick” tells you, in dollars, what you'd save or pay extra by choosing that place instead.

The home, vehicle, spending and income from your plan above — only the location changes. Tap + Compare on any example or state card (or add a place below) and it lands in your compare tray, pinned at the bottom of the screen. Tap Compare and this table rebuilds itself from your picks.
